Bodily Autonomy – The Most Fundamental Human Right is being Lost July 2, 2020 By Judy Wilyman PhD The most fundamental human right for a free society is the right to bodily autonomy: there is no freedom without the control of our own bodies. Recently, I’ve heard many people make pro-choice arguments that include bodily autonomy as a justification of their pro-choice stance. Body autonomy basically says that no one, other than the person himself, has a right to his or her body, and no one has the right to use someone else’s body without his or her full consent. “Bodily autonomy,” as an abstract philosophical principle, dates back at least to the ancient Greek philosophers. Over the centuries, legal scholars and political philosophers have thought hard Defining Bodily Autonomy. Bodily autonomy is the right to governance over our own bodies.

A child who knows that they are in control of their body is less likely to fall victim to sexual abuse, sexual assault and later intimate partner violence.

Personhood and Bodily Autonomy. The inalienable right to life possessed by every human being is present from the moment of initial formation, and all human beings shall be entitled to the equal protection of persons under the law.

When we have full bodily autonomy, not only are we empowered to make decisions about our health and future – without coercion or control by others – we also have the support and resources needed to meaningfully carry out these decisions.
